UNESCO L’Oréal Event Design

Recognition without atmosphere is just a certificate. The L’Oréal UNESCO For Women in Science fellowship is one of the most prestigious honours a female scientist in Australia and New Zealand can receive, and the 2023 Sydney ceremony needed to feel that way from the moment guests walked in. The brief was to transform a venue into an experience. The timeline was one week.

PR-led events rarely arrive with generous lead times, and this one was no exception. Seven days to concept, design and produce a fully branded environment for one of science’s most celebrated nights. The stakes were clear: five extraordinary women were being honoured for contributions that had reshaped their fields. The space needed to reflect that weight without feeling heavy.

Working within an existing logo and colour palette, the challenge was extension rather than invention. How do you take a brand identity and stretch it across an entire physical world, entrance to table, wall to screen, in a way that feels considered rather than applied?

The centrepiece was an accordion-style gallery wall, a modular, three-dimensional installation that invited guests to move through the stories of each honoree. Rather than static panels, the structure created a genuine sense of journey, drawing people in and holding them there long enough to absorb each scientist’s work. Sophisticated without being austere.

Beyond the gallery, the full venue was wrapped in the brand: large-scale banners, directional signage and digital displays carrying the signature palette and typography through every corner of the space. Nothing felt incidental. Every surface had a role.

At the table, the same attention held. Custom menus with refined typography, place cards, centrepiece accents; the kind of detail that guests rarely consciously notice but would absolutely feel the absence of. A warm, polished dining environment that let the evening breathe.

What the tight turnaround demanded, and what the work delivered, was discipline. Every decision traced back to the same intention: create a space that honours these women at the scale their achievements deserve.

The result was an environment that felt both prestigious and genuinely human. Immersive enough to signal occasion. Warm enough to feel like a celebration rather than a ceremony. For scientists who spend careers working largely unseen, the night was designed to make them impossible to miss.
